According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), bathrooms require the largest amount of water usage in most homes. Going green in the bathroom not only helps the environment, but it also helps your wallet.

The EPA estimates that if one in 10 homes upgraded their bathrooms with water-efficient showerheads, sinks and toilets, it would save 74 billion gallons of water and nearly $1.5 billion in utility costs annually. Many eco-friendly bathroom improvements pay for themselves in just a few short years with lower energy costs as well as a positive impact on the environment that can last for generations.

Use these four easy tips to make your bathroom more eco-friendly:

Use Water-Efficient Showerheads
Save water (yet enjoy the same amount of water pressure) with a high-efficiency showerhead. On average, traditional showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute; water-efficient showerheads use just 1.5 gallons of water per minute (or less).

Buy A Tankless Water Heater
Steamy hot showers feel great, but it takes a lot of energy to heat the water. Replacing your water heater with a tankless water heater will lower energy costs; tankless models use 20 percent less energy on average than traditional water heaters.

Install Water-Saving Bathroom Faucets
Do your part to reduce water consumption in the bathroom and only buy water-efficient bathroom faucets.

Only Use Low Flow Toilets
Replace your old toilet with a low flow toilet to save water. Toilet flushing is largest single use of water in the home, using more than 880 gallons of water per week for a family of four. Newer toilets use about 1.6 gallons per flush or less and The Home Depot carries toilets that use just 1.28 gallons or less per flush.
